If there’s one thing about Wisconsin weather we all understand, it’s that it doesn’t play around. One day it’s sunny and warm, and the next day you’re slipping on ice or dodging sideways rain. Living here teaches you to expect the unexpected-and that goes for your storage unit too.
We’ve had plenty of folks ask us how to protect their belongings from the crazy seasonal shifts we get up here. And honestly, a little prep goes a long way.
Take winter, for example. One of our customers once tracked snow into their unit while moving things around, and a cardboard box on the floor soaked up more slush than expected. Nothing was destroyed, but it was enough to make her rethink how she packed. After that, she switched to plastic bins and started keeping everything off the floor with pallets. No more surprises.
Cold air isn’t just about comfort-it can affect your items too. Wood furniture, electronics, even plastic storage containers can get brittle or warped in freezing temps. We always recommend wrapping sensitive items and keeping them elevated. And don’t forget the boots-tracking in snow can sneak in moisture you won’t notice until spring.
And when spring does arrive, the battle shifts from snow to moisture. Condensation can build up on surfaces inside your unit, especially as the weather warms and the air gets heavy. It helps to toss in some moisture absorbers or silica gel packs. Skip the sealed plastic bags too-they trap moisture and can lead to mold or mildew over time.
Summer isn’t off the hook either. We’re talking heat and humidity that feels like you’re walking through soup. Tight packing traps that humidity, so it’s worth giving your items a little breathing room. Skip anything that might melt-candles, old records, certain types of glue-and go for breathable covers instead of plastic wrap on furniture and fabrics.
Fall’s the time to reset. Sweep out leaves and dust (they hold moisture and can attract critters), check your unit door and lock to make sure everything’s sealing up tight, and swap out moisture absorbers so they’re ready to roll when winter hits again.
Seasonal prep might sound like overkill, but trust us-it’s a lot easier than dealing with a box of soggy holiday decorations or a warped bookshelf. Wisconsin’s weather may do its thing, but at Stand-Up Storage, we believe a little preparation makes a big difference. That effort now can save a lot of hassle later.
And hey, if you ever have questions about what to store and how to store it, we’re here at Stand-Up Storage. Text us anytime. We’ve learned a lot by helping folks store smarter, and we’re always happy to pass that knowledge along.
