Around here, people like to use the phrase “Midwest Nice.”

Most of the time, it means holding the door open, waving someone through at a four-way stop, or talking to a stranger in the grocery store parking lot.

But after this past weekend’s storm, we saw what Midwest Nice really looks like.

It looks like someone showing up with a chainsaw before they’re even asked.

It looks like neighbors helping drag branches to the curb, contractors sharing their phone numbers, and local businesses offering equipment, supplies, or an extra set of hands.

It looks like checking on the older couple down the street before worrying about your own yard.

The storm caused serious damage in Appleton, Menasha, and nearby communities. Homes were damaged, trees came down, power went out, and many families were left trying to figure out what to do next.

There is nothing easy about that.

Still, it has been incredible to see how quickly people stepped forward to help. Utility crews, first responders, tree services, roofers, restoration companies, volunteers, friends, family members, and complete strangers all started doing what they could.

That is something worth recognizing.

As a local business, these are the same communities we serve every day. Our customers live here. Our families live here. We shop at the same stores, drive the same roads, and deal with the same Wisconsin weather.

When something affects our neighbors, it affects all of us.

We know the cleanup will take time. Some people are dealing with much more than a few branches in the yard, and our thoughts remain with those facing major repairs or displacement.

But we also know they are not facing it alone.

That may be the most comforting thing about living in Northeast Wisconsin.

When the storm passes, people show up.
